Get to Know Dr. Azhar Akber
Originally from Central Asia, Dr. Azhar Akber works hard every day to ensure that patients receive the high-quality dental services they need for the smile they deserve. Having the ability to help others with their oral health while witnessing the positive impact of his work is incredibly rewarding. He’s always trying to improve his expertise and techniques, and he can’t wait to help every patient who walks through our doors. Read on to learn more about his experience and education!
Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Akber didn’t visit a dentist until he was 19 years old. After moving to the United States, he realized there was a significant lack of knowledge of oral healthcare in his family and his community. He became curious and determined to improve his and his family’s dental health, leading him to volunteer and shadow at a dental practice. There, he learned how dentistry combines medicine, science, and art in addition to helping people. After seeing how dentists help relieve dental pain, restore smiles and their functions, and improve a person’s oral health and confidence, he knew he wanted to do the same thing.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Akber studied at the University of Maryland, College Park for his undergraduate degree and later attended the University of California, San Francisco for his dental doctorate. He completed his general practice residency at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center where he provided comprehensive dental treatments, including restoratives, endodontics, dentures, and oral surgeries for veterans with complex medical histories.
Dr. Akber has undergone countless hours of continuing education through the Veterans Affairs Dental Services as well as the Academy of General Dentistry. He remains dedicated to expanding his skills and expertise so that he can provide the best possible dental care for his patients. He’s also an active and proud member of the American Dental Association.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
If you don’t find him at the office taking care of smiles, Dr. Akber is likely playing and watching soccer or spending time with family and friends. He also enjoys traveling and exploring local and national parks for a good hiking adventure. He hopes to visit more places in the future.
